Since everybody applying for the role “needs a job”, you should focus on what’s unique about the circumstances that make you interesting or noteworthy. You don't need to hit any particular word limit, but adding more clarity will strengthen your application.

Remember: the application essays are the first thing our admissions team considers when looking at your application. If you send in very bare-bones essays, we may never even consider your code sample, so keep in mind that you want to make a great impression. The most powerful essays tell a personal story that’s unique and relevant to the opportunity.
